A report from World Vision says, "Peace may finally be on the horizon for the people of northern Uganda. Ongoing negotiations between the Ugandan government and the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebel group present the best opportunity yet to end the 21-year conflict — a conflict that has displaced more than 1 million people and turned children into soldiers. Thousands of Christians have been praying for this and must continue until peace is realized. The talks have already led to increased humanitarian access and expanded freedom of movement for displaced people. However, World Vision and other advocacy organizations maintain that the negotiating parties are unlikely to achieve a durable agreement without more external support, particularly from the United States.
The negotiations have remained fragile due to lingering mistrust and lack of diplomatic priority. Given this unprecedented opportunity for peace, the international community has a critical role to play in building confidence and bringing leverage to the negotiations.
Members of Congress and the White House can now show decisive leadership to support the people of northern Uganda in their unwavering desire for peace.
How You Can Be Involved
Send a message to your members of Congress and the president. Increased support from the U.S. and the rest of the international community can help ensure that the negotiations are successful.
Participate in the third annual GuluWalk in a city near you.
Host an awareness-raising event. To prepare, we'll send you our "No Child Soldiers" Mobilizers Toolkit DVD free of charge. Any gathering, whether it's just a few friends, or a larger group from your church or community, can help raise awareness about the crisis and what can be done to help bring peace. We want 100,000 signatures on our declaration to deliver to Capitol Hill. We have just over 37,000. Get your community to sign up online or on the declaration card provided in the toolkit."
Pray for a sustainable peace in northern Uganda. -craig
